Legend has it that a mysterious hobo gave founder Julius Sturgis his pretzel recipe in exchange for a free meal sometime back in the 1850s. By 1861, Sturgis' bakery become the first commercial pretzel bakery in the United States. Today, admission is charged to see the pretzel house, a 1784 stone home that is on the National Register of Historic Places.
