The Pennsylvania German Cultural Heritage Center at Kutztown University is steeped in local history. Guides can explain when, why and how the Pennsylvania Germans came to this region and their cultural contributions to the state and America. A farmstead with stone house, a bank barn along with two log cabins, and a one-room school are part of the site. A historical, cultural and genealogical library is on site also. The Carlisle Indian Industrial School was the first off-reservation school established in the United States. It was founded in 1879 with the intention of educating and assimilating American Indian children into society. The school was in existence for more than 39 years and had more than 10,000 children enrolled. Located at the Carlisle Barracks, guided tours are available year-round. A famous American frontiersman, Daniel Boone's family homesteaded in southern Pennsylvania in the 18th century. The park covers over 550 acres and includes the Boone House, six other historical 18th-century buildings, picnic areas and more. A number of hiking and walking trails are located on the site. The mansion was built in 1828 and was designed with federal architecture. The home is located on 22 acres and was home of the former Secretary of State, James Buchanan. The 1st Presbyterian Church is recognized as the oldest public building in Carlisle, and therefore as a historic attraction. President George Washington attended this church on October 5, 1794, before marching off to Western Pennsylvania to the whiskey rebellion. During the Civil War the Battle of Gettysburg was a major turning point for the entire nation. Today, the National Park Service has preserved the park. This historic federal limestone building contains 12 rooms, 10 which contain fireplaces that feature Doric-style pilasters and a central panel. Not only is the Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church important structurally, as is was built in 1879, but it is also socially significant. This location was part of the Underground Railroad and helped numerous slaves escape into the free community of Lancaster. Tours of the church are available Tuesday through Friday from 10am to 6pm. The Demuth Museum boasts permanent and rotating exhibits focusing on the life and works of well-known artist Charles Demuth. The museum is located in the home of the Demuth family, which is one of the oldest homes in Lancaster. It was built late in the 18th century and is presently open year-round, with the exception of January, for tours.
